With the occupy movement becoming violent in some areas people question how to handle the situation. Protesters are sometimes violent towards police some protesters (a small sect) is putting out antisemitic views and struggling businesses are being hurt. While the Occupy situation proclaims a peaceful goal of fixing our broken nation it seem that they may be damaging it even more.

While I personally believe that the protesters have a right to voice their opinions and protest in a peaceful fashion I think it must be just that peaceful. There have been to many instances of of violence in the occupy movement that seem to be simply over looked by the media because it seems to fit their agenda. I feel as if even one of these events would have happened under a tea party rally it would have been played over the news for weeks if not months. In fact news sources and the media in general tried to make the tea party to look as if they were racist when the openly spoke out against racism and even forced a man at the rally who was promoting racism to leave because they did not what those ideals to be mixed in with their movement.

Study Finds Tea Party 'Not Racist'
I agree with you Nick. The movement is merely expressing its right to assembly and protest. However, it also seems that the peaceful protests are turning into violent riot quicker than anyone wants to deal with. With this movement still gaining popularity, but at a significantly low rate, it may become way too violent for people to live their lives. I think that the police are merely doing their jobs now to protect not just themselves, but the other people around them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Nick and Chris, the protester should be allowed to peacfully assemble (key word: Peacfully). It seems as every week there are a few stories about how protesters in Oakland or New York are rioting against police. The police are just doing their job keeping everyone safe. The problem is, when the police are getting involved, the people protesting feel like the police are abusing their authority. I believe the protesters are protesting the right thing, just not in the right manner.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with this blog. The protesters were allowed to protest until they became violent and decided to break the law. There is no doubt in my mind that if this would have been the tea partiers turning violent, even once, would have been showed time after time, after time.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick on this. Protesters should only be allowed to protest if the protests do not get violent. Protests getting violent can cause trouble in society, and it is just harmful to everyone in the surrounding area. The protesters are indeed saying what needs to be said, they just need to be doing it in a more calm and mellow way.
